As a Research Technician in the Video Lab at MBARI, my main responsibility is to annotate the dive tapes recorded during the scientific missions of the ROVs Ventana and Tiburon and now our *newest ROV Doc Ricketts*. We currently have over 15,000 hours of underwater video footage from Monterey Canyon, Hawaii, and the Gulf of California. I try to identify and describe the organisms and geological features so the MBARI scientists and their collaborators can access and utilize this valuable information for their research. My focus is in midwater organisms such as jellies, cephalopods, fish and crustaceans.
A custom-designed software system, VARS, makes entering annotations and searching our enormous database of over 2.5 million annotations manageable. These data and images are available to the public through our VARS Public Query web application.
For other parts of my job, I edit video footage, using Final Cut Pro, for MBARI scientists to present at various conferences and seminars or to give to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I oversaw the delivery of video assets for the Aquarium's Mysteries of the Deep auditorium program as well as their Mission to the Deep exhibit. Occasionally, I get to participate on a research cruise, and I really enjoy seeing the animals in real life!
