Instrumentation / Marine Operations Technician The Instrumentation/Operations Technician is responsible for the operation, integration, maintenance, and calibration of scientific equipment on MBARI oceanographic platforms. Primary responsibilities are to manage and maintain CTD systems for the institute’s core oceanographic platforms. Additionally, the incumbent works with engineers, scientists, vessel crews, and pilots in the development, operation, and maintenance of oceanographic instrumentation.
Research Assistant MBARI has a position open for a Research Assistant. This position will spend time in the lab and at sea collecting and analyzing data. This includes retrieving water from CTD casts, filtering the water, and preserving the filters for analysis in the lab. It is a 6-month temporary position.
Autonomous Systems Operations Engineer – Mechanical The Division of Marine Operations manages and operates ocean-going platforms for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, including two ROV-equipped ships, small boats, moorings and a variety of submerged and surface-bound autonomous vehicles. This particular position ensures that MBARI's Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (AUVs) and Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) operate in a reliable and effective manner. The incumbent assists in design, development, testing, and operation of these vehicles.
QMED-Oiler R/VDavid Packard The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking candidates for a QMED-Oiler aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel US R/V David Packard, currently under construction in Spain. After delivery, the ship will be tasked with supporting 5-10 day multi-disciplinary science missions (longer trips are possible). In an average year, the vessel supports about 18-20 science missions per year. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the QMED-Oiler carries out duties as directed at sea and in port to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel. The successful applicant will be detail oriented and have a willingness and ability to learn new skills.
Ocean Vision AI MLOps Research Engineer The OVAI program seeks to address the extraordinary challenge of scaling up our capacity to analyze underwater visual data through a globally coordinated network that enables effective collaboration between human operators and artificial intelligence. OVAI’s platforms, which include a Portal, an expertly curated public database FathomNet, and community science game FathomVerse, will achieve this through application of principles in data science, human-computer interaction, and community engagement. OVAI will accelerate ocean discovery, inform all sectors of the Blue Economy, and lead to effective and sustainable marine stewardship.
Assistant Engineer, R/V Rachel Carson Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Engineer provides assistance in the maintenance, efficient operation, and safety of the engine room and all machinery spaces of the research vessel. The individual assists in ensuring operational readiness of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. The individual supports the safe operation of the vessel as it pertains to the mechanical functions required to perform all normal research operations. Our permanent roles are full time positions that do not offer rotations. Therefore, leave is granted on an ad-hoc basis and positions are backfilled from a relief pool.
Research Technician – Chem Sensors Lab MBARI seeks a Research Technician to assist with the management of data from the biogeochemical profiling floats operated as part of the Global Ocean Biogeochemistry and Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling arrays. These are NSF funded projects to deploy large arrays of profiling floats across the global ocean. The selected candidate will work closely with MBARI research staff to process profiling float data, monitor sensor performance and conduct routine quality control on data streams. The individual will also work with international partners in support of the global Biogeochemical Argo program.
Software Engineer, Embedded Algorithms Data MBARI is seeking a Software Engineer to bring capabilities in embedded software, data analytics, and algorithm development. As a key developer on multiple projects, this individual will work with teams of researchers, engineers, and operations staff on a range of novel technologies for exploring and measuring the ocean, including: Autonomous and crewed marine vehicles, innovative imaging systems, chemical/physical/biological sensors, vehicle control and navigation systems, AI/ML applications, e.g. automated image/audio processing, signal processing, and aerial drones.
