Shawnee Traylor is a chemical oceanographer and postdoctoral fellow at MBARI. Drawing on fieldwork experience from pole to pole, she combines autonomous underwater vehicles with traditional oceanographic methods to study how the ocean stores carbon and regulates Earth’s climate. Her work seeks to better understand the mechanisms that control carbon export, recycling, and sequestration in the ocean. Through a research fellowship with the Carbon to Sea Initiative, she also contributes to the transparent and responsible evaluation of emerging ocean-based climate interventions. Shawnee holds a PhD from MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and an undergraduate degree from Columbia University. Outside of her research, she is a member of the Protect Our Winters Science Alliance and an inaugural ambassador of the Water Alliance, translating ocean science into advocacy within the outdoor community.
