I arrived at MBARI in December 1996 after three years teaching marine biology at Flinders University of South Australia. Together with my wife and our sons Daniel and Kevin, we have made Monterey our home.

As the senior education and research specialist, my role involves several different projects: seminar coordinator, summer internship coordinator, livelink mentor, distance education, links between the research institute and other partners, and other projects that I haven't begun yet. I see the development of the Information & Technology Dissemination Division here as a necessary and proactive step toward education and research and am looking forward to 2012 and beyond. MBARI has some education web pages and we are currently working on our education plan for the future. One exciting event happening this summer is the continuation of our near-real-time data teacher workshops. This will be held here in Monterey right before the National Marine Educators Association meeting (also in Monterey).

One of the projects listed above is the Internship Program. You can find out more about the internship program and the application process on the web. Past intern projects from 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 20022003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 are posted on our web site.

I am interested in the open ocean and deep sea communities with particular emphasis on invertebrates. Specific areas of interest include: Ecology and biogeography of open ocean and deep sea organisms; Functional morphology, natural history, and behavior of pelagic and benthic organisms; Systematics and evolution of ctenophores and cnidarians (molecular phylogeny). You can see some of our current midwater research work on line. I am very committed towards education at the undergraduate and graduate level.
