As a Mechatronic Engineer with MBARI, my primary responsibilities are working on the ESP instrument. This entails both building out new units for technology transfer and assisting with new front end adaptations so that the ESP core can be used in new and unique ways.

You can find out all about the ESP here.

You may be wondering, what is Mechatronics?  Borrowing from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, “Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronics, controls engineering, and computers, all integrated through the design process. It involves the application of complex decision making to the operation of physical systems. Mechatronic systems depend for their unique functionality on computer software”.  Wikipedia describes it also here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechatronics     Also, you can look here to find out more about the research being done at my alma mater, Santa Clara University.

Before joining MBARI, I’ve worked in such diverse fields as pest management, environmental analysis, university instructional support, and ultra-light aircraft manufacture. I feel lucky to be affiliated with MBARI, and enjoy the interesting and diverse projects.
