As a Research Technician in the Video Lab at MBARI, my main responsibility is to annotate the dive tapes recorded during the scientific missions of the ROVs Ventana and Tiburon (& our new ROV coming soon!). We currently have over 15,000 hours of underwater video footage from Monterey Canyon, Hawaii, and the Gulf of California. I try to identify and describe the organisms and geological features so the MBARI scientists and their collaborators can access and utilize this valuable information for their research. A custom-designed software system, VARS, makes entering annotations and searching our enormous database of over 2 million annotations manageable.
I also edit video footage, using Final Cut Pro, for scientists to present at various conferences and seminars. Occasionally, I get to participate on a research cruise, and enjoy the pleasure of seeing the animals in real life!
