Kathy Dunlop is working with Ken Smith and Dave Caress. Her research involves the use of multibeam sonar and stereo photographic imagery to measure deep-ocean topography and the combination of this with time-series data from 4100 m in the NE Atlantic on surface food supply and the activities of deep-ocean benthic communities using modelling approaches. Changes in faunal communities have been linked to climatic fluctuations thus models will incorporate the effect of climatic indices, such as surface primary production and upper ocean processes, on the carbon cycling process. This project will enhance understanding of the deep-ocean system under predicted future conditions, in particular changes in particulate carbon input as a result of increases in upper ocean temperatures.

Kathy received her PhD (Baited underwater camera studies of the biodiversity and abundance of animals in the temperate, tropical and Antarctic marine environment) in marine biology and statistics from the University of Glasgow, Scotland.
