Observing Complexity in the Coastal Ocean

Project Manager: Erich Rienecker
Lead Scientist: John Ryan

John Ryan’s focus in 2009 is on the ecology of red tides—trying to understand the oceanographic conditions that favor the initiation of harmful algal blooms. Using MBARI’s Upper Water Column AUV equipped with gulper water samplers and enhanced with Kanna Rajan’s artificial intelligence for the vehicle, the impact of chemical and biological perturbations entering Monterey Bay from rivers and estuaries will be evaluated. One hypothesis to be tested is that the switch to organic fertilizers in the fields of the Salinas Valley has favored blooms of dinoflagellates.
