Wave Energy Extraction for Vertical Profiling

MBARI engineer Andy Hamilton has been working to increase the energy extracted from a vertical profiler such that it is sufficient to power instruments as well as move the profiler up and down through the water column. In 2009, efforts will focus on a new technical approach that involves a hydraulic mechanism for converting the energy in the high-pressure water at depth from potential energy to electrical energy as it flows through an orifice.
