Zooplankton Biodiversity and Bio-optics in the Deep Sea

Project Manager and Lead Scientist: Steve Haddock

Gelatinous plankton are dominant predators that respond quickly to changing environmental conditions and are capable of restructuring marine communities. Steve Haddock’s group applies a variety of approaches, including the use of bioluminescence to track plankton distributions in the oceans. Their laboratory manipulations and molecular studies provide insight on phylogenetic relationships among organisms and the genetic underpinnings of light-related proteins. This work is aiding in the global inventory of plankton biodiversity through the Census of Marine Life.
