Midwater Ecology

Project Manager: Kim Reisenbichler
Lead Scientist: Bruce Robison

Robison’s lab has documented a disturbing expansion and shoaling of the oxygen minimum zone in Monterey Bay that may be caused by global warming. This environmental shift, which is likely pervasive elsewhere in the planet’s largest living space, is likely to cause ecosystem reverberations of epic proportions, as some animals are forced into narrower ecological niches and others expand into the low-oxygen zone. A key technology for these studies, in addition to MBARI’s ROVs, is the newly-developed Midwater Respirometry System which allows controlled experiments on the metabolism of midwater animals under ambient and altered conditions.
