Probe chemistries for the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP)

Project Manager: Chris Preston
Lead Scientist: Chris Scholin

The MBARI Environmental Sample Processor—the ESP—provides on-site collection and analysis of water samples from the ocean. The instrument is designed to collect discrete water samples, concentrate microorganisms or particles, and automate application of molecular probes which identify microorganisms and their gene products. The ESP also archives samples so that further analyses can be done after the instrument is recovered.

Chris Scholin’s lab will work on increasing the number of probes printed on an array (for more microbial targets on each array) and increasing the duration of ESP deployments in Monterey Bay to 4 months. They plan to perform the first sustained deployments of the Deep ESP and to continue work on probes for protein, rRNA, and functional gene expression.
