Observing the Effects of the Anthropogenically-Induced pH Shift in the Upper Ocean
Project Manager and Lead Engineer: Zbigniew Kolber
Zbigniew Kolber is quantifying the effects of increasing carbon dioxide in the oceans using laboratory-based techniques. He hopes to identify the key biological variables affected by pH, quantify their role in the oceanic energy and carbon cycles, and design sensors to measure them in situ. Ultimately he would deploy a pH observatory as part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative. Plans for 2008 are to build sea-going versions of the lab set-ups to be used in conjunction with other Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) experiments.
