MBARI Axial Seamount Experiment Feasibility Study (MASE)

Project Manager: Dave Clague
Lead Scientists: Dave Clague, Chris Scholin
Lead Engineer: Mark Chaffey

This project will determine whether the Monterey Ocean Observing System (MOOS) mooring, as currently designed, can survive the higher sea state at Axial Seamount along the Juan de Fuca Ridge and whether there is a benign surface on the volcano for laying benthic cable to instrument clusters. Axial Seamount is an active central volcano that appears to be inflating in advance of an eruption. The project will also explore potential partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (NOAA-PMEL).
