The Robison laboratory has officially joined the High CO2 Initiative, adding a much-needed component of midwater biology to the earlier focus on benthic biology. In 2008, the Robison team's research will have a major focus in the Gulf of California, where the oxygen minimum layer is five times larger in extent than what is found in Monterey Bay. Increased carbon dioxide input is predicted to expand the oxygen minimum layer in many parts of the ocean, and the Gulf of California is a much warmer ocean basin than what we observe off California. Thus this expedition is in some ways a trip into the future Monterey Bay. Robison’s group will also continue their quantification of carbon flow through the midwater by sampling and elemental analyses.
