Midwater Time Series
MBARI has been surveying the midwater and providing a quantitative analysis of the animals encountered since 1993. With approximately one remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ventana dive per month, the time series measures the identity, abundance, and vertical distribution of the constituents of the midwater fauna at specific sites. The data generated have been employed in a large number of publications and dissertations. A high-profile paper on Humboldt squid based on this time series was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2007. A new focus in 2008 is examining whether the time series might be useful for seeing spatial or temporal patterns in midwater biodiversity.
