Lagrangian Sediment Trap

Project Manager: Alana Sherman
Lead Scientist: Ken Smith
Lead Engineer: Brett Hobson

Depending on the results of a feasibility study underway in late 2007, MBARI may contribute some engineering effort in 2008 to adapt a float to function as a drifting sediment trap to be deployed under an iceberg in the Antarctic during a National Science Foundation-funded cruise for Ken Smith and Bruce Robison. The purpose of the sediment trap is to capture particulate organic matter exported from the enriched ecosystems newly discovered under icebergs and quantify their contribution to the global carbon cycle.
