MBARI adjunct Peter Girguis has been awarded some MBARI ship time to test a novel method for powering Homer beacons: a microbial fuel cell. If successful, this project could pave the way to a sustained presence of instruments on the seafloor without the need to use expensive and environmentally unfriendly conventional batteries.
