Upper ocean biogeochemistry
Observing the effects of the anthropogenically-induced pH shift in the upper ocean
Project Manager and Lead Engineer: Zbigniew Kolber
Kolber is quantifying the effects of increasing CO2 in the oceans using lab-based techniques. He hopes to identify the key biological variables affected by pH, quantify their role in the oceanic energy and carbon cycles, design sensors to measure them in situ, and ultimately deploy a pH observatory as part of the Ocean Observatory initiative (OOI). To date, biofouling has made long-term, in situ measurements a challenge.
