Ryan has identified a region in the inner shelf waters of the northeastern portion of Monterey Bay that he terms the “red tide incubator.” His research is focusing on the coupled physical, chemical, and biological conditions that conspire to create conditions favorable for red tides in this region, such as long residence time of local waters, stratification, and anthropogenic influences from nearby river discharges.
