Midwater research
Bioluminescence and zooplankton
Project Manager and Lead Scientist: Steve Haddock
Steve Haddock’s group is working on cloning unique fluorescent proteins, using bioluminescence to track plankton distributions in the oceans, and describing the ecological functions of fluorescent proteins. They are also using molecular and morphological techniques to examine the diversity and phylogenetics of gelatinous plankton, mainly siphonophores and ctenophores. This work is aiding the global inventory of plankton biodiversity through external collaborations, including the Cnidarian Tree of Life and the Census of Marine Life projects.
