Oceanic carbon and nitrogen cycling in the 21st century

Project Managers: Francisco Chavez and Ken Johnson
Lead Engineer: Jim Bellingham

In 2007, this candidate for an institutional initiative will conduct some field programs in the sparsely sampled oligotrophic ocean that will allow detailed plans for the initiative to be put forward for 2008. Western Flyer cruises will provide an opportunity to look for interactions between near coastal and open ocean ecosystems and to collect fundamental information about the nitrogen cycle using both traditional and genomic methods. Substantial progress was made in 2006 in data assimilation and prioritizing experimental methods.
