Benthic biology and ecology

Project Manager and Lead Scientist: Jim Barry

This project focuses on quantifying the changes with depth in benthic species abundance and diversity from the continental shelf to the abyssal plane, including the effect of Monterey Canyon as both a source of organic matter to the deep sea as well as a dynamic disturbance. Barry’s benthic biology research group will continue to document the effect of carbon transport by Monterey Canyon on the abundance of benthic animals. Eric Pane, a postdoc, will be completing the results of his lab-based studies on the sensitivity of deep and shallow-living crabs to the effects of elevated levels of CO2, in anticipation of the stresses that will be endured by natural systems.
