Unobtrusive observation techniques

Lead Scientist: Edith Widder
Lead Engineer: Gene Massion

This proposal is part of a continuing effort to develop methods for observing ocean communities unobtrusively. Specifically, we wish to characterize the noise production of ROV Ventana vs. ROV Tiburon and compare the abundance and diversity of organisms seen in comparable midwater transects made from these ROVs. We are suggesting that transect comparisons can be made by effective use of the extensive MBARI video database. Experiments with the deep-sea observatory, Eye-in-the-Sea, will continue. We will also be testing a new illuminator and a new bioluminescence trigger mode, and we will attempt 48-hour, rather than 24-hour deployments.
