Biophysical Oceanographic Sensor Array (BiOSA):
A new tool for assessing global trends in oceanic photosynthesis

Project Manager & Lead Scientist: Zbigniew Kolber
Lead Engineer: Dennis Klimov

The Research Engineering group at MBARI will implement a sensor development cycle where:

  • Scientific objectives drive a search for novel measurement methods and techniques
  • The most promising of these methods are implemented in new sensors and instruments
  • The new instruments are field-tested and deployed in scientific applications

The acquired knowledge usually brings about new scientific questions, and the process reiterates. When successfully implemented, this cycle, besides producing new tools for scientific inquiry, will lead to technical progress with an impact far beyond oceanography. It is our hope that we can put into practice such a cycle at MBARI, where in addition to instrument development, we will be productive in the fields of optics, spectroscopy, modern microscopy, signal processing, and software engineering. The new instruments will be made available to MBARI researchers, as well as to the oceanographic community.
