For more than a year, porting high-definition television to the ROV Tiburon has been a priority for the institute. Repeating the packaging design used for HDTV on the ROV Ventana is not an option because the system weighs too much and does not have sufficient room for panning and tilting. MBARI elected not to attempt to develop an HDTV system in house for Tiburon, because HDTV systems are rapidly evolving in response to consumer demands. The current MBARI plan is to monitor closely the release of new HDTV systems to find a lightweight, compact commercial system that MBARI can package for deep sea use.
