Solid state analyzers for marine research

It is generally recognized that current methods of chemical analyses are too cumbersome and expensive to obtain data with the spatial and temporal resolution required to study the natural spatial and temporal variability of chemical distributions within the ocean. This project uses recent advances in Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) to develop miniature general purpose fluid handling systems and chemical analyzers on a silicon/PVC/glass wafers that can be used at any depth within the ocean. This project represents MBARI’s effort to play a role in their development and to ensure reliable systems for oceanographic applications.
