The MBARI Sample Archive data management system offers a process to extract ROV sample
collecting information from video annotation, navigation, and CTD files. The system also
assists in the management of the inventory of samples and provides the capability to make
queries for browsing this information from the web. Enhancements to this system, now in
prototype stage, will include:
- Geographical display of collecting locations by web-based GIS (geographic information
system)
- Extraction of data from the proposed next generation of interfaces to video annotation
and expedition databases
- Improved functions for querying, producing specimen labels, managing sample loans, and
tracking analyses performed on specimens
Each part of this project requires the development of software applications. The
enhancements will lead to more productive use of samples and dive time, reduce the effort
required to archive the specimens, and improve both internal and external access to the
samples and their accompanying information.
Next: Expedition
and ROV CTD-database migration
