1999 Projects: Mooring improvements

MBARI Ocean Observing System

The goal of this project is to create a context for proposing and evaluating new initiatives for further development of MBARI’s ocean-observing capabilities. We will coordinate the planning process for management and staff to assess and define the scientific objectives and requirements, the technology challenges and opportunities, and the necessary scope of commitment for various options. The purpose is to build a strategic plan for the MBARI Ocean Observing System, so that decisions made within the next few years will support the wider array of scientific research that we hope to conduct in the future. This strategy will complement the change in status of the moorings to an institute- wide operational platform and will broadly address questions such as how best to utilize AUV technology in ocean observing systems.
