1999 Projects:
Information management and archiving
Documentation of R&D projects
Project lead/manager: Judy
Donaldson
MBARIs engineering research and development projects have not been documented in
a consistent, orderly manner. Information currently available only by personal
communication and dispersed in file cabinets and on hundreds of computer diskettes and
hard drives is not easily accessible. Furthermore, this information is subject to being
lost as people move around within the institute or leave to pursue other interests. If
MBARI is to fulfill its mission to "transfer research results, technology, and
operational techniques to the marine science community worldwide," project work must
be systematically documented. Engineers, ROV pilots, and other staff who develop new
hardware, software, and technical methods are responsible for submitting basic
documentation, including text and drawings. The technical writer will be responsible for
ensuring readability and organization of basic manuals and will work with the
librarian-archivist to keep the information updated and accessible. The goal of this
project is to produce the manuals that will make MBARI technical information readily
available internally and externally to the marine science community.
