Goals of MBARI's research and development group:

  • Create multi-disciplinary teams to develop and test innovative technology for ocean-science research.
  • Perform innovative, high-quality research that takes advantage of MBARI’s unique location, equipment, and skills.
  • Focus research on important questions where progress to date has been technology-limited.
  • Keep up with scientific and technological advances in a variety of disciplines and consider how these could be applied to ongoing and proposed projects at MBARI.
  • Develop new technology based on practical science requirements, professional standards, and quality control.
  • Manage all research programs to make sure that they remain cost effective and on schedule.
  • Support and maintain MBARI instruments and systems operating in the field (support engineering).
  • Promote the use of MBARI technology and research results for the good of the greater oceanographic and scientific research community.
  • Support MBARI's educational and outreach activities.
