The development group within R&D leads the engineering efforts at MBARI. This group has engineers specializing in electrical, mechanical and software engineering. MBARI uniquely emphasizes the teaming of engineers and scientists to solve complex ocean problems. 

A major accomplishment of MBARI's engineers was the design and development of the remotely operated vehicle Tiburon. A new focus for the group is advancing autonomous underwater vehicle technology.
