MBARI Senior Scientist Kelly Benoit-Bird named a AAAS Fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has named MBARI Senior Scientist Kelly Benoit-Bird a 2025 Fellow. Becoming a AAAS Fellow is among the highest distinctions in the scientific community. This program honors scientists, engineers, and innovators whose efforts are scientifically or socially distinguished.

Benoit-Bird was recognized for her distinguished contributions to the field of marine ecology, particularly for innovative development, application, and integration of acoustical techniques. She is among nearly 500 scientists, engineers, and innovators elected as 2025 Fellows.

Benoit-Bird leads the Acoustical Ocean Ecology Team at MBARI. Her work uses innovative acoustic technologies to answer fundamental questions about how marine animals behave in response to constantly shifting ocean environments.

Benoit-Bird is the fifth MBARI researcher to be recognized as a AAAS Fellow. She joins Senior Scientist Emeritus Peter Brewer, Senior Scientist Francisco Chavez, Former President and CEO Marcia McNutt, and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison in receiving this honor.

AAAS Fellows play a crucial role in shaping public policy, advancing scientific research, and influencing national and global perspectives on critical issues.
