Life at sea

Life at sea

Expedition log by MBARI Senior Scientist Aaron Micallef

The first full days at sea have been a mix of preparation, discovery, and settling into the rhythm of life aboard the IBRV Araon. With calm seas guiding us eastward, we have been busy testing instruments, holding coordination meetings, and fine-tuning our workflow so that when the surveys begin, every system runs seamlessly around the clock.

Life on board quickly finds its cadence—meals, work shifts, data checks—but it is far from routine. The ship itself is an adventure. The cabins are surprisingly spacious and comfortable, a welcome retreat after long hours on deck. For those new to IBRV Araon, weaving through narrow passageways and learning the layout is part of the early adjustment.

The ship’s facilities add to the experience. There is a gym for those needing a break from the constant hum of science, and even a ping-pong table for impromptu matches between crew and scientists. The galley serves authentic Korean food, which is spicy, flavorful, and full of surprises for those of us not accustomed to such dishes. Each meal has become a small cultural exchange, adding another layer of discovery to the expedition.

Step outside, and the scene changes entirely. The air hovers around zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), crisp and bracing, while sea ice drifts past in ever-shifting patterns. Standing on deck with that view, it is impossible not to feel both the remoteness and the beauty of the Arctic. These are still the early days of our journey, but already life at sea is shaping into a unique blend of science, camaraderie, and quiet awe at the environment around us.
