Expedition Type: MBARI

Seafloor Fault Expedition 2018

September 14 to October 2, 2018 – MBARI’s Geological Changes group is studying submarine channels and seafloor faults offshore of Southern California.

Deep-Sea Respiration Expedition 2018

August 8-16, 2018 – The Midwater Ecology Group is measuring oxygen consumption rates of select deep-sea animals using a custom-designed tool, the Midwater Respirometry System (MRS).

Sur Ridge 2018 Expedition

July 12-16, 2018 – MBARI bilogists recently completed a research cruise to study the ecology of deep-sea corals and sponges at Sur Ridge, off the Big Sur coast.

Bioinspiration 2018 Expedition

June 21-26, 2018 – This research cruise is the first expedition of the Bioinspiration Lab on the R/V Western Flyer to study midwater organisms for bioinspired engineering design.

Chasing ocean ecosystem hotspots

June 5-11, 2018 – Large, multi-institution, CANON field experiment employs a wide range of technology to follow hotspots of biological activity.

Studying the biological pump

May 17-19, 2018 – During a recent research cruise MBARI’s Marine Microbial Ecology Group and their colleagues retrieved experiments from the seafloor to learn about carbon cycling in the deep sea.

Pelagic-Benthic Coupling 2018 Expedition

Our cruise off the central California coast has several objectives related to three research themes in deep-sea ecology: 1) study the sponge and coral communities at Sur Ridge, 2) revisit a corn stover to sample the colonizing communities, and 3) begin a wood-fall experiment to see how species colonize these ephemeral sources in the deep-sea.

Canadian Arctic 2017 Expedition

A group of MBARI scientists and engineers, led by geologist Charlie Paull, return to the Beaufort Sea on a South Korean icebreaker to study the Arctic seafloor.

Deep-Sea Eukaryotic Life 2017 Expedition

For seven days, the Marine Microbial Ecology Group will participate in the Deep-Sea Eukaryotic Life Expedition aboard the R/V Western Flyer.

CANON Spring 2017 Expedition

Chief Scientist Francisco Chavez is leading a group of researchers during a six-day expedition in Monterey Bay aboard the R/V Western Flyer
