Research Engineer (Term Position)

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s engineering department is offering rare opportunities to collaborate with leading ocean researchers in shaping the future of ocean technology at our state-of-the-art facilities in Moss Landing, CA.

Successful recruits for this position will split time between software and other development responsibilities related to MBARI’s wave-energy conversion system, and broader involvement in other robotics and instrumentation projects. Reporting to the ME Group Lead, this position will have significant technical responsibility in a Department of Energy funded software development project using ROS, and will also participate in development and deployment of the MBARI wave-energy converter and related systems.

This a term position renewed annually up to four years depending on continued funding and job performance. Additionally, depending on need, availability, and job performance, there is a possibility of longer-term employment at MBARI for the successful incumbent.

Requirements:

  • C++ proficiency and familiarity with software development in Linux.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an engineering discipline (or equivalent experience) plus demonstrated success in the area of robotics, software development, or numerical simulation.
  • Ability to provide excellent service and support in a multi-tasking work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications to include any or all of:

  • Experience with ROS.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Familiarity with ocean engineering and wave-body interaction concepts.
  • Experience with Matlab, Python and similar programming environments.
  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for specified periods of time.
