New CeNCOOS training program equips local university students with powerful ocean observing tools The Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS) brings together experts and information from more than 60 organizations across California to help guide ocean science and policy. Housed at MBARI, this research collaboration makes a trove of data publicly available to guide decision-making about marine life, ecosystems, and resources. The California Ocean Observing Systems (CalOOS) Data Portal connects data and information from the state’s two regional ocean observing networks—CeNCOOS and the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS)—with a diverse community of stakeholders, including managers and planners, operational decision-makers, scientists, and the general public.Earlier this month, members of the CeNCOOS team led an in-person, hands-on training on the CalOOS Data Portal for students at California State University, Monterey Bay, connecting the next generation of marine scientists with powerful ocean observing tools. The interactive session led by CeNCOOS Engagement Specialist Alexandra Boutros and Tetra Tech Technical Project Manager Iwen Su introduced students to the capabilities of the CalOOS Data Portal and provided practical experience exploring ocean observing data and tools that support coastal science, management, and decision-making.Students who participated will also receive a certificate of training, recognizing their hands-on experience with the CalOOS Data Portal and supporting professional development. For additional information or images relating to this article, please email pressroom@mbari.org.
