Marley Parker

Scientific Communicator

As the scientific community faces increasing volatility and uncertainty, questions abound. How can we get folks outside of academia to support research? Which projects should we promote? What messages will resonate with people? Clearly communicating the value of ocean science has never been more critical.
As a professional science communicator with over a decade of experience, my biggest take-away is this: folks outside of academia can’t always relate to science. But most people, regardless of their background or beliefs, pay attention to a good story.
During this presentation, I will share examples from my work that highlight the power of first-person narratives in science. I will provide insights on how to incorporate solid storytelling into scientific outreach and discuss the use of different mediums including professional photography, video production, blog posts, and social media.
