Cranes in MBARI’s marine operations

A crane on the R/V Rachel Carson is used to deploy ROV Ventana into the sea.

Cranes are integral to MBARI’s marine operations, which include lifting and transporting very heavy equipment. Ship engineers operate cranes on our research vessels to deploy or retrieve remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and other equipment in the ocean.

Cranes are also useful on our pier for moving equipment on and off the ships. Moorings are massive pieces of equipment that cannot be moved without a crane. In the time-lapse video above, Dock Foreman Eric Fitzgerald operates a large Grove crane to transfer MBARI’s M1 mooring from the dock to the deck of R/V Rachel Carson in preparation for its deployment in Monterey Bay.
