Roman Marin III Career Pathways Program
The Roman Marin III Career Pathways Program was established to honor the life and legacy of a conscientious employee whose contributions left a lasting impact on the institute and its community. Dedicated by the Board of Directors to honor MBARI’s Outgoing President and CEO Chris Scholin, the program reflects Chris’ wish to recognize our late employee Roman’s skill, craftsmanship, enthusiasm, and passion for ocean science. There are two pathways for this program, both paid positions: one path offering internships and the other offering graduate fellowships.
The Career Pathways Intern track provides students—who might not otherwise have access to hands-on opportunities—with immersive training in marine operations, machining, administration, and other essential roles that support MBARI’s work in ocean research and technology development. Interns gain practical experience alongside skilled professionals, building the expertise and confidence needed to pursue meaningful careers supporting scientific discovery.
The Career Pathways Graduate Fellowship track prepares the next generation of leaders in ocean research and technology. Inspired by Roman’s commitment to scientific progress and innovation, this pathway supports graduate students engaged in cutting-edge research in fields such as marine science and ocean engineering. Fellows receive mentorship from leading researchers and engineering professionals, and opportunities for hands-on fieldwork, technical development, and experience with advanced sensing systems and ocean data analysis tools. Through these real-world applications, fellows gain the skills and experience needed to tackle critical challenges in oceanographic science and technology.
The Career Pathways positions serve as a fitting tribute to Roman, whose career journey exemplifies the transformative impact of early opportunities. After working as a journey-level car mechanic, Roman joined MBARI as a term employee, gaining hands-on experience that helped him earn a Master’s degree in marine science from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He later returned to MBARI as a Research Technician, leaving a lasting mark through both his work and his character. Roman’s story reflects the profound value of investing in emerging talent, demonstrating that when we create opportunities, it can transform a student’s professional path and open doors to meaningful, long-term employment dedicated to growing ocean knowledge.
By offering these complementary pathways, the program honors the legacies of Roman Marin and Chris Scholin, ensuring their spirit of dedication and innovation continues to inspire and guide future generations.
