The R/V Western Flyer's phone system is equipped with cellular and microwave capabilities for short distances in the Monterey Bay (~30 nm). For longer distances, global iridium and satellite communications are available for emergencies and daily contact with shore support staff. To contact the vessel while offshore, contact Marine Operations at (831) 775-1900.

For longer voyages, iridium phone cards may be available for sale from the ship's captain for personal calls.

Electronic mail (with limited file size) is also transmitted 2-3 times per day. Temporary email accounts are assigned to visiting scientists. The internet is not available once the vessel leaves the dock.
