Ocean Observatory Apprentice The Ocean Observatory Apprentice will assist in the construction, deployment, recovery, and maintenance of oceanographic moorings. This position will be required to carry out tasks related to preparing oceanographic sensors for deployment and for assisting in the disassembly of a mooring. There may be opportunities to go to sea on the R/V Paragon and other research vessels. They may also assist with teaching an AI machine learning model to identify marine predators and prey. Tasks may include using hand and power tools, power washing, painting, database management, and sensor setup.
Mechanical Technician MBARI is looking for an entry level Mechanical Technician that will bring energy, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn to our mechanical technician group. The individual in this position will perform a wide variety of tasks in support of scientists, engineers, ship personnel, and others. These tasks may include fabrication of parts using various tools and techniques, assembly, repair, and/or modification of equipment and mobilization and demobilization of gear to support deployments. This position may include work at sea and around cranes, docks, and shop spaces.
Information Systems Security Administrator The IS Security Administrator will contribute directly to designing, deploying, and maintaining the security and operations of information systems in use at MBARI. Primarily focusing on Cybersecurity, this role will propose, implement, and maintain cybersecurity policies for both land-based facilities as well as sea-going assets, including research vessels. They will manage cybersecurity protections for the organization’s infrastructure of information systems, defining and applying policies and deploying security-focused software solutions.

Marine Operations and Vessel Compliance Assistant MBARI’s Department of Marine Operations is looking for an Operations and Vessel Compliance Assistant to support diverse activities surrounding our core marine operations. This role reports to the Divisional Director. It is uniquely situated to directly connect to MBARI shipboard operations, autonomous platform operations, and various support staff. To be successful in the role, the candidate will need to be able to handle many tasks at once and develop a task prioritization strategy as well as work collaboratively with others.
Instrumentation / Marine Operations Technician The Instrumentation/Operations Technician is responsible for the operation, integration, maintenance, and calibration of scientific equipment on MBARI oceanographic platforms. Primary responsibilities are to manage and maintain CTD systems for the institute’s core oceanographic platforms. Additionally, the incumbent works with engineers, scientists, vessel crews, and pilots in the development, operation, and maintenance of oceanographic instrumentation.
QMED-Oiler R/VDavid Packard The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking candidates for a QMED-Oiler aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel US R/V David Packard, currently under construction in Spain. After delivery, the ship will be tasked with supporting 5-10 day multi-disciplinary science missions (longer trips are possible). In an average year, the vessel supports about 18-20 science missions per year. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the QMED-Oiler carries out duties as directed at sea and in port to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel. The successful applicant will be detail oriented and have a willingness and ability to learn new skills.
Ocean Vision AI MLOps Research Engineer The OVAI program seeks to address the extraordinary challenge of scaling up our capacity to analyze underwater visual data through a globally coordinated network that enables effective collaboration between human operators and artificial intelligence. Assistant Engineer, R/V Rachel Carson Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Engineer provides assistance in the maintenance, efficient operation, and safety of the engine room and all machinery spaces of the research vessel. The individual assists in ensuring operational readiness of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. The individual supports the safe operation of the vessel as it pertains to the mechanical functions required to perform all normal research operations. Our permanent roles are full time positions that do not offer rotations. Therefore, leave is granted on an ad-hoc basis and positions are backfilled from a relief pool.
Software Engineer, Embedded Algorithms Data MBARI is seeking a Software Engineer to bring capabilities in embedded software, data analytics, and algorithm development. As a key developer on multiple projects, this individual will work with teams of researchers, engineers, and operations staff on a range of novel technologies for exploring and measuring the ocean, including: Autonomous and crewed marine vehicles, innovative imaging systems, chemical/physical/biological sensors, vehicle control and navigation systems, AI/ML applications, e.g. automated image/audio processing, signal processing, and aerial drones.
President/CEO The President/CEO is the most senior level position at the Institute, overseeing all functions: Marine Operations, Science, Engineering, Information and Technology Dissemination, and the Office of the Executive Director which includes Finance and Human Resources. The President/CEO is a member of, and reports directly to, the Board of Directors, and serves as chief staff person to support the Board of Directors in carrying out their responsibilities.
