Distribution in ocean
Bi has an ocean distribution similar to that of Mn.  Concentrations are relatively high at the surface and they are depleted at depth (data).  A strong Bi maximum occurs within the depth range of the oxygen minimum.

Speciation
Dissolved Bi is present in the +III oxidation state, which hydrolyzes to form BiO+, Bi(OH)2+ and Bi(OH)30.  

Analysis
Bismuth is analyzed by hydride generation, flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
