Data management
Quality data is of paramount importance for accurately interpreting our ocean environment. MBARI scientists and engineers have authored many applications to manage the vast quantities of data collected in the pursuit of understanding our ocean. We have invested heavily in developing software to meet, not only our needs, but that of the oceanographic community. Below is a listing of software and systems MBARI has built over the years to assist in data management.

Oceanographic Decision Support System
In the ODSS, ocean scientists collaboratively design their experiments, communicate with other participants, track asset locations and command robotic vehicles at sea

Spatial Temporal Oceanographic Query System (STOQS) Data
STOQS is a geospatial database and web application designed to give oceanographers efficient integrated access to in situ measurement and ex situ sample data.

Video Annotation and Reference System
The Video Annotation and Reference System (VARS) is a software interface and database system that provides tools for describing, cataloging, retrieving, and viewing the visual, descriptive, and quantitative data associated with MBARI’s deep-sea video archives.
