Technology development
One of the ways that we can study the effects of climate change on benthic communities is by designing in situ experiments that simulate the predicted future conditions of the ocean. The Free Ocean CO2 Enrichment system (FOCE) and the Benthic Respiration System (BRS) are tools we use to manipulate the pH and chemical composition of seawater.

Benthic respirometer system
Oxygen consumption (a measure of biological activity) of the organisms living in the sediment is measured using a benthic respirometer system (BRS). This instrument is used in situ (in place on the seafloor).
