Research Engineering Technician
MBARI’s Bioengineering Lab seeks a Research Engineering Technician for a program focused on deep sea instrumentation and bio-inspired design. The candidate must have a background in a STEM field and demonstrable programming skills (e.g., MATLAB or Python) in data analysis. The candidate will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team with other scientists and engineers developing tools and techniques for studying movement and ecology of marine organisms. Excellent organization and planning skills, experience working in the field or at sea, and demonstrated skills in scientific writing are highly desirable. The position will involve data analysis (e.g., image processing, segmentation, object and landmark tracking), laboratory (e.g., 3D imaging, particle image velocimetry, small-scale robotics), and field work (e.g., ROVs, AUVs), with opportunities to advance over time.
A Master’s degree or higher in a STEM field or equivalent experience is required. Experience with publishing scientific papers is desirable. The candidate must be able to work with diverse groups of people. The position may include occasional, long (approx. 1 month) oceanographic cruises, travel to distant and remote locales, as well as scientific meetings.
The earliest start date for this position is January 1, 2018.
