In today’s fast-moving world where information changes every second with social media posts and breaking newscasts, science education often seems to be lagging behind with textbooks and lessons that have been used over and over again for years. For educators looking to connect classroom activities with the real world and students’ daily lives, the internet can provide access to real-time science from local and distant environments. Students can be involved in citizen science projects, and can keep an eye on migrating whales, sea-level rise, nesting turtles, changing ocean pH, as well as local water quality. EARTH is designed to facilitate the ability for educators to access these data and use them in meaningful ways in their classroom.

During this workshop, educators work with active researchers to explore current science and/or engineering research, data, and conclusions. The educators are given time to develop their own curricula using the knowledge from these explorations and their own experiences to create classroom lessons tied to the abilities of their own students as well as current education standards and pedagogy. The teachers also develop connections with each other and with the researchers that assist them in expanding their classroom reach across the country.

Opportunities:

Teachers involved in this workshop will:

  • Explore cutting edge marine science and technology, ocean observatories and the data that they collect
  • Examine current scientific studies that use oceanographic data and how that data has changed our way of thinking about the oceans
  • Develop new curriculum that uses real science and near-real-time data to teach science content and process and addresses their needs and the needs of their students
  • Be part of a program that integrates the use of near-real-time data and real science into classrooms at a national level
  • Experience a rich opportunity for professional collaboration and receive classroom resources, housing, and travel allowance (exact amounts will depend on the number of teachers signed up for the workshop). We ask that the participants arrange their own travel, reasonable costs will be reimbursed.
  • Discuss how new curriculum materials can be developed that use virtual reality, augmented reality, and/or distance education to teach science content and process and address the needs of educators and their students

Objectives:

The purpose of the workshop is to:

  • Educate, excite, and engage teachers with the concept of using data in the classroom
  • Develop curricula enabling teachers and students to utilize near-real-time data
  • Increase awareness of the Ocean Literacy Principles
  • Create relationships between researchers and educators that can lead to future collaborations
