EARTH Lesson Drafts—2011

Comparison of How Anthropogenic Carbon Dioxide is affecting our Oceans

To collect and compare the physical measurements of the North Atlantic and the North Pacific Ocean. To use available archive data to look for patterns over time and to share results via Skype and e-mail.

Earth’s Future Ocean: Acidic Or Basic

This inquiry activity allows students to use the scientific method to explore the pH of various liquids and apply the results to determine the impact of fluctuations in ocean chemistry on calcifying organisms that absorb seawater and create calcium carbonate exoskeletons. Interrelationships pertaining to the Atmosphere, Lithosphere, and Hydrosphere through biogeochemical cycles may also be […]

Here today…Gone in 2061

Current models predict that the ocean’s pH will decrease through the time because of increased CO2 absorption by the ocean. Organisms that incorporate calcium into their bodies will most likely be adversely affected. In this lesson, students will realize that the ocean’s they experience today may be different from what they will share with their […]

Ocean Acidification Labs

The four labs that I have developed for the unit on ocean acidification investigate pH, the solubility of CO2 in cold and hot water, the change in pH when CO2 is added to salt and fresh water and the buffering capacity of seawater.

Pop, pH, and CO2

Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between [CO2] and pH.

Swimming the Gauntlet in the Gulf of Alaska

Student pairs start the lesson with a kinesthetic activity in which they form a gauntlet of hazards faced by salmon. One to several of the students (or the teacher) plays the salmon trying to get through the gauntlet as it makes its journey from the ocean to its spawning grounds upriver. Back in the classroom, […]

Today’s Fish is Your Tomorrow

By learning about local fish habitat, students are able to understand how survivability of juvenile fish is crucial to not only the survival of their own species but to all species along the food chain which ultimately affects food sources, recreation, cultural traditions, and economy of humans.

Underwater Map Dance

This lesson will inform students of underwater land formations and how they can be used to create underwater map dances.

WANTED! Watershed Awareness Needs Timely Experiments & Data

Students will study true historical events that led to the decline of different marine species. Students will discuss and analyze stories to see the need and importance of environmental monitoring and scientific ocean observation and data collection. This is even more critical as marine groups are impacted with climate variability and changes in the physical […]
