EARTH Lesson Drafts
December 7, 2015 – Pensacola
By learning about the sawfish habitat, students are able to understand how survivability of the juvenile sawfish is crucial to not only the survival of their own species, but to all species along the food chain which includes the mangrove forests and the all of the organisms that rely on that area in their lifespans.
Mangrove trees are trees that live in salty environments – they can obtain freshwater from saltwater. Some secrete the salt through their leaves, others block the salt in their roots. Mangrove forests create an ecosystem that traps and cycles organic materials, chemicals, and important nutrients. Mangroves also provide protected nursery areas for fish, crustaceans and shellfish. They also provide food […]
As part of our Oceanography unit, students will be choosing four jellyfish to research and create a hanging mobile representing the four species. While investigating life cycle, habitats, food sources, predators, environmental conditions (i.e. pollution, ocean acidity, temperature, etc.), and participate in Jellywatch.org. Skills to be developed: citizen science, observation, identification, research, data entry, developing […]
Students will have prior knowledge of animal classification and the basic taxonomy system. After researching various types of sawfish, their adaptations, and their environments, they will “discover” a new species of sawfish. They will name it based on its characteristics, and explain how its adaptations help it to survive in its habitat/ecosystem.
At the end of the unit, students will be able to differentiate between the different species of jellyfish in the local Pensacola/Navarre area and be able to teach family, friends and classmates about the jellyfish. Students will conduct research that compares and contrasts the major stages of the jellyfish lifecycle, why they exist and how […]
There are 5 species of sawfish, determined by their body shape and teeth placement on the rostrum. Based on these differences, students will attempt to answer if there is an affect on the diets of these species. Students will design and build scale models of the rostrums of the five species (dwarf, long tooth, green, […]
