Postdoctoral Fellowship (NSF Funded)

The Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) team at MBARI seeks an energetic and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to participate in studies using biogeochemical observations from profiling floats to develop understanding of ocean biogeochemistry. SOCCOM is a broad and multi-institutional study of ocean circulation, the global carbon cycle, and climate change. Of particular interest is utilization of the sensor data from a large array of biogeochemical profiling floats to study processes at the basin and inter-annual time scales. The emphasis is on the Southern Ocean and may include its impacts on the global ocean. Linkages of observational data to numerical modeling projects in SOCCOM is a plus.

Individuals will join a vigorous interdisciplinary research group involving PIs from Princeton University, University of Arizona, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. The postdoc will be expected to lead all aspects of this project, including data retrieval and interpretation, project reporting, manuscript preparation, and communicating key results with collaborators and the broader scientific community. The project will be conducted at MBARI under supervision of Dr. Ken Johnson and Dr. Yui Takeshita in collaboration with the Chemical Sensor group.

A Ph.D. in chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry, or a related field is required. Extensive experience and knowledge of the marine biogeochemistry, as well as demonstrated proficiency in Matlab, R, Python, or similar is highly desired. Opportunities to participate in research cruises deploying profiling floats will be available.  The candidate will work with a diverse group of engineers and scientists, thus, strong communication skills are desired.

Note – This is a 2-year term position with a possible extension.
